    Learning Theory and Algorithms for Revenue Optimization in Second-Price Auctions with Reserve

    Second-price auctions with reserve play a critical role for modern search engine and popular online sites since the revenue of these companies often directly de- pends on the outcome of such auctions. The choice of the reserve price is the main mechanism through which the auction revenue can be influenced in these electronic markets. We cast the problem of selecting the reserve price to optimize revenue as a learning problem and present a full theoretical analysis dealing with the complex properties of the corresponding loss function. We further give novel algorithms for solving this problem and report the results of several experiments in both synthetic and real data demonstrating their effectiveness.Comment: Accepted at ICML 201

    The Impact Workplace Microaggressions Have On Those Who Identify As Lesbian, Gay And Bisexual.

    Progress has occurred in recent years for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender equal rights. However, there are still areas where discrimination is evident such as the workplace. Some lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender employees may not share their identity at work due to discrimination concerns. Such forms of discrimination may be passive acts such as microaggressions. These microaggressions can make work-life stressful; furthermore, the stress experienced at work may impact other areas such as home life. This study explored two areas. The first area investigated was whether identity disclosure at work affected workplace microaggressions. The sample size was 88 working adults who identified as cisgender and lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Participants completed an online survey posted through social media. The survey consisted of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale and the Microaggressions Experiences at Work Scale. A multiple linear regression model assessed whether identity disclosure, specifically acceptance concerns and concealment motivation, could predict workplace microaggressions. Findings indicated the model was a good fit, and there was statistical significance for both acceptance concerns and concealment motivation as predictors for workplace microaggressions. However, acceptance concerns were the stronger predictor. The second area investigated relationship satisfaction with romantic partner. Sixty-two participants met the inclusion criteria, investigating whether acceptance concerns, concealment motivation, and workplace microaggressions could predict relationship satisfaction. The analysis was also multiple linear regression, and the model was determined to be a good fit. However, acceptance concerns were the only statistically significant predictor for relationship satisfaction. The findings provided insight on how lesbian, gay, bisexual identity disclosure and microaggressions spill into relationship life

    Assessing the Link between Adolescent Fertility and Urban Crime

    We use data of neighborhoods of Bogotá to assess the causal relation between their adolescent fertility and their homicide rates. We find that neighborhoods with high adolescent fertility rates, and that have low secondary enrollment and high crime rates at the moment the children of their teen mothers become teenagers, are more likely to have higher homicide rates in the future, when those children reach their peak crime ages, estimated to be between 18 to 26 years old in violent cities of Colombia. The result is robust to various specifications, and to modeling the spatial autocorrelation of homicides.Crime, Illegal Behavior, Law Enforcement, Adolescent Fertility, Spatial Econometrics.     A dual band high impedance antenna for RF Harvest applications

    A design for a compact dual band very high impedance antenna for RF Harvest applications is presented. The antenna is designed to present a very high input impedance at its feed point at 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz. The design incorporates the folding concept into a customized bowtie antenna to achieve high input impedance. The design methodology and simulations are presented, as well as a comparison of the measured results against the simulation results. A rectifier circuit and dual band matching network are also simulated and presented

    Silencing of the Na+/H+ exchanger 1(NHE-1) prevents cardiac structural and functional remodeling induced by angiotensin II

    Chronic activation of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) favors several cardiac diseases, among which myocardial hypertrophy occupies an outstanding place. In this context, the hyperactivity of the cardiac Na+/H+ (NHE-1) exchanger plays a key role. The pathologic remodeling of the myocardium constitutes an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality with continuously increasing healthcare cost. Therefore, the development of better therapeutic strategies emerges as highly mandatory. Our goal was to prevent angiotensin II (ANGII)-induced cardiac hypertrophy by NHE-1 gene silencing in Wistar rats. The intramyocardial injection of a lentivirus coding a specific small interference RNA (l-shNHE1) significantly reduced NHE-1 expression exclusively in the heart (~ 50 %) and prevented cardiac remodeling in rats exposed to chronic infusion of ANG II (heart weigh/tibia length: 24,03 ± 0,7915 mg/mm vs 28,45 ± 0,9779 mg/mm and collagen volume fraction 2,526 ± 0,5003 vs 5,982 ± 1,043 in l-shNHE1 + ANGII and ANGII, respectively).Interestingly, this was accompanied by an improvement in cardiac function determined by echocardiography even though blood pressure remained elevated (Fractional shortening 0,5960 ± 0,4228 vs -0,9567± 0,06888 and blood pressure at the end of ANGII treatment 141,2 ± 6,117 mm Hg vs 134,1 ± 6,723 mm Hg ; in l-shNHE1 + ANGII and ANGII, respectively). ANGII infusion increased myocardial NADPH oxidase activity but the l-shNHE1 injection prevented oxidative stressas revealed by the normalization of lipid peroxidation (T-BARS 12,40 ± 2,887.vs 23,05 ± 1,537 in lshNHE1 + ANGII and ANGII, respectively). These results allow as to propose the partial silencing of the cardiac NHE-1 through lentiviralinjection as a promising tool in the prevention of ANGII-induced cardiac hypertrophy.Fil: Medina, Andrés Javier.     A multi-group SEIRA model for the spread of COVID-19 among heterogeneous populations

    The outbreak and propagation of COVID-19 have posed a considerable challenge to modern society. In particular, the different restrictive actions taken by governments to prevent the spread of the virus have changed the way humans interact and conceive interaction. Due to geographical, behavioral, or economic factors, different sub-groups among a population are more (or less) likely to interact, and thus to spread/acquire the virus. In this work, we present a general multi-group SEIRA model for representing the spread of COVID-19 among a heterogeneous population and test it in a numerical case of study. By highlighting its applicability and the ease with which its general formulation can be adapted to particular studies, we expect our model to lead us to a better understanding of the evolution of this pandemic and to better public-health policies to control it

    The initiation of rotational motion of a lying object caused by wind gusts

    In this paper, the initiation of motion of an object lying on a horizontal floor due to the aerodynamic force produced by a time-dependent wind is considered. It is assumed in this paper that when the aerodynamic force is large enough, the body starts to rotate around the most rearward supporting contact point, or pivoting point. This motion is analyzed by studying the dynamics of the rotation of the body around a pivoting point fixed to the floor, and placed in a gravity field under time-dependent aerodynamic loads produced by a non-steady incoming flow. This rotation initiation phase, which is relevant in the case of a time-varying gusty flow, is an intermediate phase between the two stages generally considered, namely, the initial static equilibrium without motion, and the final flight. In this intermediate phase, which is studied here, the rotational dynamics of the body should be taken into account and the gust characteristics as well, in order to determine whether once initiated the motion it leads to either a frustrated motion or to a successful one. A non-linear mathematical model has been developed, and a linear approximation is deduced, which allows us to obtain the condition for a successful flight. This condition shows two limits, valid for either long or short duration gusts, respectively. Some experiments have been performed in a gust wind tunnel, and results show a satisfactory agreement. To take into account the intrinsic random character of the phenomena in practical situations, expressions for the probability of exceeding the condition for successful flight under short duration gusts are obtained, assuming common probability density functions for the random parameters involved
